Luke Li, who prefers to go by Lukeiscrazyman, gave the motivational keynote at our January mixer. Over 50 college students, recent grads, and young professionals gathered at Hive at 55, several were moved by his speech, and all made new connections.

The slideshare Luke presented shows the course of his career. To quickly summarize, his recommendations include the following:

Know yourself. We’ve also written about strengths and weaknesses.

Be different. It is different people who change the world.

Understand media and use it. Memorize our tips on using social media to land a job.

Listen. Think. Ask. Deeper understandings come from posing thoughtful questions.

Keep making things. It’s like Holstee says, “go out and start creating.”

Inspiration for making things

I had the opportunity to talk to Luke after the event, and I asked him where he looks to find inspiration. I was expecting to learn about a must-see NY museum or little-known hipster hideaway, but was surprised to learn his answer:

“Everyday at work, I make sure to go for a walk. It helps clear my mind and sometimes gives me new ideas.”

Spoken like a true out-of-the-box thinker (and crazy man), Luke finds inspiration from the world that immediately surrounds him and feels no need to follow the droves that flock to the city’s touristy art spots. In this sense, inspiration is merely another way to look at life.
