Once you come up with an idea for a blog, the first step to building followers is to first realize who your target audience is. You might be blogging about travel, photography, fashion, beauty, lifestyle, entertainment, music, art, cultural experiences, politics, social issues, home décor…the list goes on.
Whatever you choose to blog about will attract an audience that is interested in the topic or theme of your blog. It’s just like writing a book, making a movie, or producing music. You market your work to certain types of people, which is why it’s always essential to keep in mind of your target audience. Who would be interested in reading what you have to say?
When you’ve determine your targeted audience, you can promote your blog directly to them. One way to do that is by utilizing social media, particularly Facebook and Twitter. Post your blog and include relevant hashtags with the link. That way, others who are discussing topics similar to your blog can see your post.
For an example, if you have a blog post about Estée Lauder products, then good hashtags that could be used include #beauty, #makeup, and #skincare. Hashtags are a good way to drive people to your posts, and it helps get your blog discovered so you can start building followers.
Apart from hashtags, it is also important to create a Facebook fan page for your blog. You can share the page with your friends and ask them to share it as well. With the page, you can keep track of likes and also post a link to an updated blog post, for followers to see. You can also interact with other bloggers or companies with similar interests, expanding your network and bringing more people to your blog.
Another strategy is to reach out to people who will find your blog relevant to their work. For an example, if you were writing about animal rights, then it would be a good idea to find animal advocacy organizations and email them with your blog and a brief description. Some of these organizations may help promote your blog by featuring it on their website.
Creating business cards with your name and the name of your blog, along with the link, is another useful tool. You can then go to related events for networking opportunities to hand out your card. For an example, if you are a fashion blogger, going to Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week would give you the opportunity to hand out your cards to guests attending fashion shows. There are many other fashion bloggers that meet there, giving you the chance to connect with others.
It can take awhile to build followers and drive traffic to your blog, but though online promotion and making connections with people, it can be done. To become a successful blogger does take creative writing skills, but you also need to treat it as a business. Keep in mind the kind of audiences that would be interested in reading your blog, and build followers through social media platforms and reaching out to connections.
