Looking for a job can be notoriously stressful, and with each day that passes without an interview, hope tends to slowly diminish. But do not despair!  Delia Camasca, Talent Acquisition Specialist and Career Coach at TV Media Careers, led a workshop called What Recruiters Won’t Tell You About Your Job Search during Find & Follow Your Passion at Eugene Lang The New School for Liberal Arts, and below we’ve outlined her actionable tips.   1. 46% of successful job seekers apply directly through the application tracking system. (All you skeptics out there, rest assured: when you are applying to jobs through the application system, your resume will be reviewed.)
  2. Many listings receive upwards of 1,000 applications and of those only 10% qualify: this happens because those who are applying do not meet most or any of the requirements.

Tips

While these facts may seem a little unsettling, there is hope yet. Recruiters do call back so make sure that the phone number and email address on your resume are correct. “You’d be surprised. I’ve come across resumes that had the wrong phone number on them or didn’t have a phone number at all,” says Delia. Continuously check for right information so that if you are the right candidate, it will be easy to get in contact with you.

Use Search Engine Optimization

Use keywords from the company’s job description in your resume. If you feel you are a great fit and have the qualities the job description states then make sure you put that in your resume. Recruiters will look for applicants using those keywords.

Meet the Requirements

Meet at least 60-70% of the job’s requirements. If you don’t, don’t bother to apply because your resume will not even be considered. One great piece of advice Delia shared was that if the company asks for a specific number of years of experience and you don’t have it, don’t waste time applying and look for appropriate positions instead.

Networking is Key

Try to find employees you may know within the company and ask if they can forward your resume. Most jobs are acquired through mutual friends and connections. Plus, when job recruiters are looking for candidates, they look at internal referrals before going to the application tracking system.

Make Your Job Search Your Full-time Job

Remember that looking for a job is a full time job and you should treat it as such. Make sure you are checking your email every morning and applying to jobs as soon as you hear of an opening. Research people in the company on LinkedIn to make connections – getting a job is often about who you know and not entirely about what you know.

You Are Not Alone

“You should be spending 80% of your time networking and 20% doing everything else,” stressed Delia.

There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who are in the same position as you -searching for jobs on a constant basis hoping to land the perfect one. Just keep in mind that your best bet of breaking out from the rest is to utilize the people you know. Connections are everything, so get out there and network!
