As a national consultant, professor, lawyer/ lobbyist, and candidate for New York City elective office, Ms. Abzug has been a professional involved in many fields including politics, urban economic development, and human rights. She is an Adjunct professor in Urban Studies at Barnard College/Columbia University where she teaches courses on Urban American and International Cities, community building and economic development and a series of Women and Leadership courses. She is the Kenneth Cole Professor of Community Engagement and Community Building at Columbia University.

After the death of her famous mother, the former NY Congresswoman Bella Abzug, in 1998, in 2004 Liz co-founded the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute (known as BALI) a 501-c-3 not for profit leadership training organization that trains young women in high school and college and whose mandate is to “inspire women and girls to lead the future.” She has served as BALI’s President/CEO, since the organization’s founding. BALI works to provide debate training and other specific leadership skills as well as professional mentoring to high school and college level women so that they may become the proactive, principle driven, and visionary leaders of the 21st Century.
