Congrats, you’re ready to move out on your own. Even though college is over, it’s likely you’ll still need roommates. Searching for roomies in the “real world” is different than in college for numerous reasons (you can’t just request a change from your RA), and not something to take lightly. When coupled with searching for an apartment, it can be downright overwhelming.
If you aren’t lucky enough to continue living with a college roommate and need to start from scratch, here are some questions you can ask to find an ideal roommate match:
Lifestyle
- What’s your average work schedule like?
- When do you normally go to bed?
- When do you like to shower?
-
What do you like to do on the weekends?
-
How much do you cook?
-
Do you drink or smoke? Inside or outside of the apartment?
-
Do you ever work from home?
-
What’s your romantic situation like?
-
How often do you plan on having visitors like friends or family?
Personality
-
What awkward roommate situations have you dealt with in the past?
-
Would you be freaked out if our door was accidentally left unlocked one night?
- What annoys you?
Finances
-
Can you afford the deposit? Do you have a co-signer?
-
What will your budget be like outside of rent? For instance, will you care if lights are left on one night, knowing that it could have made the electric go up a bit?
-
Store brand and brand name? Do you care when it comes to shared items like cleaning supplies and toilet paper?
-
Do you have any subscription services like Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime?
Logistics
- What furniture or appliances do you plan to contribute?
- When and what time would you like to physically move in? Will you have someone to help?
Cleanliness
-
How often do you clean?
-
What do you consider clean?
-
What grosses you out?
-
What do you think your worst habit is?
-
How do you feel about sharing things? Clothes? Food?
Miscellaneous
- Do you have any allergies? Food? Pets?
- What do you want to know about me?
Finding roommates randomly off sites like craigslist or from Facebook groups can definitely happen and work out well, but it’s always great to meet people IRL and go from there.
