Class Description

Think your skills at Facebook stalking, refreshing Twitter streams or Googling yourself will lead you nowhere? Think again! Social media can be a great way to build online presence, educate yourself and discover new professional opportunities. Feeling overwhelmed? NY Creative Interns is here to help you get started on a social networking extravaganza that will lead you to the internship of your dreams.

Please note: Attendees should have a basic grasp of social media. Laptops/tablets/iPads strongly recommended.

Topics Covered

  • Twitter: searching for internships, which Twitter chats to participate in, hashtags and people to follow, networking via Twitter, writing a bio that sets you apart from the crowd.
  • Facebook: do’s and don’ts, privacy settings, cautionary tales.
  • Linkedin: pimping out your profile, keywords, the importance of groups, following companies, connecting with professionals in your field.
  • Blogging: which platforms to use, personal branding, tips and tricks, getting your name out there.

Class Overview

The bulk of the class will include loads of tips, tricks, and actionable steps you can take to accelerate your internship search. But of course, like at all our events, there will be time to mix and mingle with other attendees.

Teachers

Emily Miethner is the Social Media Marketing Coordinator at Sterling Publishing. She has been teaching workshops on social media since she graduated from Hofstra in 2010. Most recently she helped to organize the first ever Columbia University Social Media Weekend where she was a “Social Media Doctor” and organized two panels about social media, one which she moderated.

Marny Smith is the Community Manager at NY Creative Interns and Customer Support Manager at Challenge Post. She recently organized a panel on Social Media and Job Hunting for the first ever Columbia University Social Media Weekend where she was also a “Social Media Doctor.”
