Does any of this sound familiar? Your family has expectations that you’ll be in a particular role by a particular time. Or maybe your school career fairs and professors talk about and share jobs at the same type of companies all the time. Or your peers and friends are all pursuing jobs at the same giant companies — they assume you want and will end up at one of those obvious companies, too.

But, you want something different. Because of your family background, major, or where you went to school, oftentimes you find the same type of job and career opportunities presented to you.

In every industry and field, there are obvious choices, usually due to the company size or how long it’s has been around. Obvious doesn’t always mean the best. It also doesn’t mean it will be the best for you. It’s important to go outside of your circle and obvious choices to make sure you’re fully exploring all available career options.

For instance, when it comes to hospitality careers, people immediately think of hotels and restaurants. One path you might not have considered? Coworking. Flexible workspaces. Shared offices.

According to the Global Coworking Growth Study 2019 by coworkingresources.org, the number of coworking spaces worldwide is projected to soon cross 20,000 and reach 25,968 by 2022, an increase of 42% from 2019. This also means that there has been an average increase of 2,595 new spaces every year since 2015.

We interviewed recruiters and leaders at Industrious who shared why a career at Industrious and in coworking is an exciting career path you need to consider.

Industrious is the largest premium flexible workspace provider in the U.S., with a presence spanning more than 40+ cities. The company is known for its professional atmosphere and thoughtfully-designed spaces that can accommodate teams of all sizes and stages, from solopreneurs to enterprise-level businesses.

How is a role at a coworking space different than what’s seen as more traditional hospitality roles?

Hospitality isn’t exclusive to restaurants and hotels and is something that can be provided and experienced in all aspects of everyday interactions. That’s why this role is unique in the sense that we’re mindfully taking hospitality out of those traditional environments and inserting it into the workplace. You get the face-time with members, as well as being able to provide a great customer experience.

With this role, as opposed to traditional hospitality roles, you get to have an amazing work-life balance. While we want our members to have an incredible work experience, we also want the same for our team and internally promote a healthy work-life balance. Unlike traditional hospitality roles, the hours are consistently and primarily during regular business hours, and with generous paid time off (PTO), we also encourage our employees time to take off and recharge.

What are the challenges and advantages of working in coworking?

This role is incredibly rewarding and it really brings new meaning to hospitality in the work environment. Plenty of people don’t like their jobs and part of that is because of the environment that they are in. Creating a beautiful, professional, and collaborative environment is important to the culture of a company and we’re very fortunate to be a part of that. There are so many challenges and advantages to working in a coworking space. You get to work with a spectrum of teams and it’s amazing to see them grow and succeed.

At the end of the day, you’ve had a small part in helping them achieve success. Creating a community within a coworking space is advantageous for businesses small and large to offer their employees — it takes the pressure off them to worry about the things that may seem small but are significant such as breakfast, coffee, and Mother’s Day card stations.

What are the key attributes you look for in new hires?

Comfort with ambiguity is always top of mind across every team we hire for. We’re in an exciting stage of our growth right now where we’re not always sure what opportunities or challenges the next week, day, or hour has in store. Experience or appreciation of hospitality service values is also essential in every role. To us, customer service is all about building relationships and serving the whole person.

What should candidates look for to really discover the culture of a company to see that you’ll enjoy the environment? Especially when it’s a newer startup-like environment? How is Industrious’s culture different than others?

Candidates should make sure the companies that they are interested in interviewing at has values that align with theirs. Most companies will have information located right on their website that you can review to get a good sense of what the company believes is important. Glassdoor is a really great resource that allows you to read reviews and company updates, as well as see pictures of the teams and events. You can also research who works at the company and is in a similar position or department that you are interested in. Reach out and ask to have an informal coffee chat; going straight to the source is a great way to find out exactly how the culture is and what they enjoy about working there.

At Industrious, our mission is to make members “proud and excited to come to work,” and that overflows into our company culture as well. We’re highly collaborative, respect everyone’s point of view, and committed to diversity and inclusion. We show up for our team members both in and out of the office because we value the whole person. We’re a fast-paced company where your work will have an immediate impact. Innovation and ideation are encouraged no matter your role or functional area!

How is Industrious growing and what opportunities will that growth provide to its employees?

Industrious has doubled in size the past year and today we currently have over 80 locations across the US. We’ll have over 100 locations by the time we cross into 2020 and we have no plans to slow our rapid growth trajectory. Because of this, we have countless examples of employees moving up within their department as well as exciting cross-functional moves that allow us to share expertise and knowledge across the organization.
